Introduction

“And your Lord has stated: Make du’a to Me, I will (of a surety) respond to you. Verily, those who are too arrogant to worship Me will enter the Fire of Hell, humiliated”. (Surah Ghaafir: 60)

Truly, man has been created for a noble and great purpose - that he may worship Allah alone, without any partners. Allah has said in the Quran:

“And I have only created jinn and mankind to worship Me”.(Surah Al-Dhaariyaat: 56)

And the greatest and most noble form of worship is du’a. Without Allah we are nothing. Without Allah we are weak and helpless. Our need for Allah is greater than our need for food, drink and air for it is Allah that provides us with these, and much more. When we make du’a to our Lord we are affirming our weak and helpless state, recognizing that only Allah can help and guide us. We are showing complete submission to His will, and perfect recognition of His right to be worshipped.

Du’a is not simply an act of worship but it is one of the best acts of worship; it is a sign of one’s Eemaan and demonstrates obedience to Allah:

“And call upon Him, making the religion sincerely to Him”. (Surah Al A’raaf: 29)

Allah is close to the one making du’a for sincere du’a is a sign of humility whereby the believer shows weakness to his Creator, freeing himself from arrogance.

Dear sisters and brothers, let us never stop realizing the importance of supplicating to our Lord with consistency, dedication and deep sincerity. Let us not ever lose hope in our du’as being answered for indeed it was said by Ayesha (RA): “No believer makes du’a and it is wasted. Either it is granted here in this world or deposited for him in the Hereafter as long as he does not get frustrated”.

Du’a is one of the highest yet easiest acts of worship; it opens up a sincere and profound dialogue with the Creator and makes the person more optimistic.

Du’a is a cure for all diseases and a weapon for the weak and wronged. It is a characteristic of a true believer and thus beloved to Allah:

“Verily, they used to hasten to do good deeds, and they used to make du’a to Us with hope and fear, and used to humble themselves before Us”. (Surah Al Anbiyaa: 90)
